How the pour calculator works

For each distinct whiskey, the calculator multiplies guests by ounces per pour, converts ounces to milliliters using 29.5735 mL per U.S. fluid ounce, adds a 10% setup buffer, divides by the selected bottle size, and rounds up. It then totals the required bottles across the flight. Liquid from different whiskeys is never pooled for the bottle count.

The standard-drink comparison assumes 40% ABV spirits and uses 1.5 fluid ounces as the comparison point. It is a rough supplies-planning estimate, not an impairment or driving-safety calculation.

How factual claims are sourced

Alcohol-volume and responsible-hosting facts link to primary public-health sources such as the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sensory-practice claims link to published research when a relevant source is available. Source links appear on the page where the claim is used.

What is editorial judgment

Recommendations such as using a 0.5-ounce tasting pour, limiting a first flight to three or four samples, allowing 60 to 90 minutes, and moving from gentle to more intense whiskey are Beacon & Barrel planning judgments. They are practical defaults, not universal rules, medical advice, or professional alcohol-service standards.
