Agree on the stay before preparing the bed

Confirm arrival and departure dates, sleeping arrangements, stairs and bathroom access. Tell visitors whether the space is a dedicated room, sofa bed or shared living area, and when it becomes private. Ask what would make the arrangement workable; do not assume everyone can use a floor mattress.

Ask about food preferences and any household considerations such as pets, fragrance or temperature. Families bringing children should arrange appropriate sleeping equipment with their caregivers. Ordinary adult guest bedding is not a substitute for age-appropriate child sleep equipment.

  • Share parking and arrival instructions.
  • Make room for a bag without blocking the walking route.
  • Explain how the room becomes private if it is a shared space.
  • Agree when people need quiet and when the household gets up.
  • Keep medication and personal belongings in an appropriate private place.

Set out one complete sleeping setup per person

Prepare clean bedding, a usable pillow and an accessible extra blanket. If using a sofa bed or air mattress, set it up before the visit so you can check fit, operation and the manufacturer’s use instructions. Confirm there is a safe way to move around it at night.

Put a lamp or reachable light switch by the sleeping place, offer drinking water and show guests where they can charge devices. Keep charging cables away from the walking path and use equipment as directed. Give people a place to put glasses, a phone or a book.

Make the bathroom easy to use

Show guests where the spare toilet paper, soap, towels and plunger are. A small visible basket can remove the awkwardness of asking. Tell them whether to leave bedding in place or put it in a laundry basket when they depart.

A night light may help someone in an unfamiliar hallway, but ask what suits them and place it without covering needed outlets. Do not make promises about accessibility without checking the actual route and bathroom arrangement.

Leave a short morning note

Write the Wi-Fi details, where to find water and breakfast basics, the household’s plans and anything guests need to know about pets or doors. Keep passwords on a private household note, not a public printable or website. A simple “coffee is here; help yourself after seven” can be more useful than an elaborate breakfast.

Have a low-effort breakfast that fits the household and guests. Agree on fridge space if visitors bring their own food. If the main celebration is late, tell overnight guests what is happening the next morning so nobody feels required to wait for an unannounced brunch.

Useful gaps to fill

Extra toiletries and clean linens are often enough. New luggage racks, robes and decorative pillows are optional; give the guest usable space before adding accessories.
